AI Dubbing – Privacy Policy
AI Dubbing (“the extension”) is a Chrome extension by Rouhollah Khoshnud that dubs the speech playing in a browser tab into a language you choose (79 languages) in real time, using Google’s Gemini API. It can also show the text of that translation as subtitles on the same tab, and save the dubbed voice as an MP3 file on your device.
1. Data the extension handles
- Tab audio. Only after you click “Start dubbing”, the extension captures the audio of the current tab and streams it directly from your browser to Google’s Gemini API (generativelanguage.googleapis.com) over an encrypted connection, in order to receive the translation. The audio is processed in memory; the extension does not record or store it, and it is never sent to the developer. Capture stops when you click “Stop dubbing” or close the tab.
- Your Gemini API key. Stored locally on your device with Chrome’s extension storage (
chrome.storage.local). It is sent only to Google’s Gemini API to authenticate your requests. It is not synced and not shared with the developer. - Settings. Your dub language, subtitle setting, recording setting, volume levels and smart-ducking preference are stored locally on your device.
- Recording (optional). If you switch recording on, the dubbed voice is encoded to an MP3 file inside the extension on your own device and saved to your Downloads folder when you stop dubbing. The recording is never uploaded anywhere, and the extension asks for the Chrome “downloads” permission only at the moment you turn the feature on.
- Subtitles (optional). When you switch subtitles on, the extension shows a small overlay on the tab you are dubbing that displays the text of the translation. The overlay only renders text the extension sends to it; it does not read, collect or change anything on the page, and it is removed when you stop dubbing or switch subtitles off.
2. Processing by Google
Audio sent to the Gemini API is processed by Google under your own API key, according to the Gemini API Additional Terms of Service and the Google Privacy Policy. Depending on your Gemini API plan (for example, the free tier), Google may use submitted content to improve its products. Please review Google’s terms to understand how your plan handles data.
3. Permissions
- tabCapture and activeTab: to capture the audio of the tab you choose to dub, only when you start dubbing.
- offscreen: to process the audio and play the translated voice in the background.
- scripting: only to show the optional subtitle overlay on the tab you are dubbing.
- downloads (optional): only to save an MP3 recording to your Downloads folder, requested when you turn recording on.
- storage: to save your API key and settings on your device.
4. What the extension does not do
- It does not collect browsing history, page content, personal information or usage statistics.
- It does not sell or transfer user data to third parties, other than sending tab audio to Google’s Gemini API to provide the dubbing you requested.
- It does not use or transfer data for advertising, creditworthiness or lending purposes, or for any purpose unrelated to dubbing.
The use of information received by the extension adheres to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
5. Deleting your data
Clear the API key field in the extension, or uninstall the extension, to remove all data it stored on your device.
6. Changes
